Sendai – Multilingual radio information broadcasts

From Kyodo News
http://english.kyodonews.jp/news/2011/03/80492.html

TOKYO, March 23, Kyodo

Three local FM radio stations in the northeastern Japan city of Sendai are offering a multilingual program to provide disaster-related information for foreign residents in the city, which was hit by the March 11 catastrophic quake, an association for foreign residents said Wednesday.

The 10-minute program in English, Chinese, Korean and easy Japanese is provided by the Sendai International Relations Association in the city and offers information on issues related to the disaster and reconstruction from the Sendai city government and other institutions including foreign embassies.

Sendai-based radio station Date fm started broadcasting the program for listeners who do not speak Japanese on March 11, while Radio3 and fm Taihaku started broadcasting earlier this week, the association known as SIRA said.

The information provided in the program includes notices of restoration of water and gas supply, evacuation advisories from foreign embassies and information on how to prevent the spread of infectious disease while living in crowded shelters.

Radio channels are 77.1 MHz for Date fm, 76.2 MHz for Radio3 and 78.9 MHz for fm Taihaku.

SIRA also provides such information and assistance to foreigners via telephone and its blog on the Internet.
